GAF Pana-Vue 35mm Slide Set — Disneyland Country Bear Jamboree (VP-75, Set One)

GAF Pana-Vue 35mm slide set VP-75 for Disneyland Country Bear Jamboree, Set One, showing five slides with Country Bear characters including Big Al and Teddi Barra

A Ticket to the Jamboree, Frozen in Time

Long before park guests could snap a photo with their phones, a trip through Disneyland's beloved Country Bear Jamboree was the kind of experience you carried home in your imagination — or, if you were lucky, on a perfectly composed 35mm slide. This GAF Pana-Vue set, coded VP-75, Set One, offers exactly that: five professional-quality slides capturing the rowdy, sentimental cast of Audio-Animatronic bears that made the attraction one of the most warmly remembered in Disneyland's history.

Produced through a licensed partnership between GAF Corporation and Walt Disney Productions, these Pana-Vue slide sets were sold in park souvenir shops and through mail-order catalogs across the 1970s and into later decades. They were the premium souvenir of their era — sharper than a postcard, more intimate than a guidebook illustration, and lit with the warm, saturated Kodachrome-era color that modern digital photography has never quite replicated.

Meet the Bears

The five slides in this set introduce a cross-section of the show's most beloved performers. The Five Bear Rugs — the hillbilly band that anchored so many of the attraction's rousing musical numbers — are captured here in all their shaggy, banjo-plucking glory. Gomer, the gentle giant at the upright piano, provided the show's tender heart; seeing him frozen mid-performance is a strangely moving thing for anyone who ever sat in the darkened theater and watched him play. The Sun Bonnet Trio — Bunny, Bubbles, and Beulah — brought an absurd sweetness to every appearance, their enormous bonnets framing faces of improbable earnestness.

Then there is Big Al, quite possibly the most beloved bear in the entire production. A perpetually despondent, off-key crooner, Big Al became an unexpected cultural touchstone — the kind of character guests quoted to each other in line, bought plush versions of, and remembered decades later with inexplicable fondness. And finally Teddi Barra, the glamorous chanteuse who descended from the rafters in a gilded cage, all sequins and slow-burning charisma. She was the show's showstopper, and her slide in this set reflects that star power.

The Attraction Behind the Slides

Country Bear Jamboree opened at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in 1971 and made its Disneyland debut the same year, operating in the park's Bear Country area (later renamed Critter Country). It was one of the last major attractions personally championed by Walt Disney himself before his death in 1966, originally conceived as an anchor experience for a ski resort project that never materialized. That origin story — a Walt-era vision that outlived its creator — gives the attraction an emotional weight that most theme park rides simply don't carry.

For thirty years, the Disneyland version ran essentially unchanged, a remarkable run in an industry that perpetually chases the new. When it finally closed in 2001 to make way for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, the reaction from longtime guests was something close to grief. The attraction had become, for many families, a multigenerational ritual — grandparents who had seen it in 1972 brought grandchildren who would never get the chance. A set of slides like this one, then, is more than a souvenir. It is a document of something gone.

Why Collectors Treasure These Sets

GAF Pana-Vue slide sets occupy a specific and underappreciated niche in Disney collecting. They were produced in relatively modest quantities compared to mass-market postcards or pins, and the format itself — requiring a viewer or projector to appreciate properly — meant that many sets were stored away rather than displayed, protecting them from light damage and handling wear. A complete, intact set with all five slides present and the original sleeve or housing is genuinely uncommon to find today.

This particular set benefits from its subject matter. Country Bear Jamboree memorabilia has experienced sustained collector interest precisely because the Disneyland version is gone, and because the character designs from the original production carry such strong nostalgic associations. Items that document the attraction as it actually appeared — not in licensed artwork, but in direct photographic records — are especially sought after. These slides were made to be looked at, and what they show is the real thing: the actual Audio-Animatronic figures, under actual park lighting, in the theater that no longer exists.

This set came to us as part of a larger Disney estate collection, assembled by someone who clearly understood the long game of preservation. Condition on the slides is consistent with careful storage — the color saturation and clarity that make Pana-Vue sets so appealing are very much intact. For anyone building a Country Bear collection, or a broader Disneyland historical archive, VP-75 Set One is a piece worth holding.
